What Are Shin Splints?

Shin splints are inflammation and pain located on the inner part of your lower leg (tibia or shin bone) that occurs when the tissue that joins your muscles to the tibia becomes inflamed and irritated.

Mild to severe shin splints are extremely common in all sports that involve excessive running, especially high impact sports such as:

  • running
  • track and field events
  • rugby
  • football
  • field hockey soccer
  • fitness walking
